Treatment of Hereditary Hemochromatosis
Initial Treatment
Maintenance Treatment
  • Phlebotomy of one unit of blood (500 ml) weekly or twice weekly as tolerated
  • Check hematocrit and hemoglobin before each phlebotomy to assure that they fall no more than 20% below starting value
  • Check serum ferritin at intervals and stop frequent phlebotomy when it falls below 50 ng/ml
  • Avoid vitamin C supplements
  • One phlebotomy every 2-3 months (approx) to maintain serum ferritin between 25 and 50 ng/ml
  • Avoid vitamin C supplements
