Overview

Diabetes and the Heart: A Clinical Summit on Critically Challenging Patients is the inaugural summit of the Joslin Diabetes Center and Cleveland Clinic partnership. Among the largest and most respected Academic providers of CME, our two institutions believe that the most reach and impact can be achieved in continuing medical education through innovative collaboration. With world class clinical care protocols and cutting edge knowledge in both diabetes and cardiac care, we feel that together, we will engender the largest reach more efficiently and effectively.

It is well known that patients with diabetes and the cardiometabolic syndrome are at increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease. With the increase in prevalence of the cardiometabolic syndrome and its comorbidities, the need to optimize preventive and therapeutic interventions is a major focus of most clinicians in primary care.

Certainly, clinicians must recognize the signs and symptoms of the cardiometabolic syndrome and initiate early and effective preventive interventions. However, timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment are equally as important to reduce eventual morbidity and mortality.

This summit is for anyone in clinical practice who is providing care for patients with diabetes who are at-risk or have already developed the components of the cardiometabolic syndrome or cardiovascular disease.

Target Audience

Primary care physicians, endocrinologists, and cardiologists will find this summit valuable in their daily practice.

Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant will be able to do the following:

  • Describe the physiologic and clinical interrelationships among diabetes, other components of the cardiometabolic syndrome, and increased cardiovascular risk
  • Identify the components of the cardiometabolic syndrome, their clinical definitions, and their targeted treatment goals
  • Evaluate the cardiometabolic risk status of at-risk individuals in the outpatient and hospital settings
  • Describe protocols for cardiovascular evaluation and diagnosis in the person with components of the cardiometabolic syndrome.
  • Describe unique clinical characteristics and treatment concerns of coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure in people with diabetes
