Description
In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the pericardial space, both from the medical and interventional standpoint. The pericardium has unique characteristics in terms of its histology, microphysiology, and its role in various disease processes. This has attracted the interest of health care providers in various medical fields. To further the collaboration of such physicians in a multidisciplinary approach, a “Pericardial Center of Excellence” was recently created at the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, Cleveland, OH.
Catheter-based, minimally invasive, and videoassisted cardiac therapeutics have extended their reach into the pericardium, providing easy direct access to the epicardial myocardium for the purpose of cardiac ablation, implantation of cardiac pacemakers, and delivery of cardioactive drugs. Such direct access was previously restricted to patients with pericardial effusion for the purpose of drainage and treatment. However, over the past several years, the normal pericardium has been accessed for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of cardiac diseases and electrophysiologic abnormalities.
This will be the first symposium to focus on a multidisciplinary approach to pericardial diseases and interventions in the pericardial space. It will identify the advances in diagnostics and interventional therapeutics and offers the opportunity to bring together medical practitioners, interventional as well as surgical physicians, researchers, and medical industry representatives to discuss the current application and potential future of interventional pericardiology.
Target Audience
The topics covered in the symposium are directed toward cardiac electrophysiologists, cardiovascular disease/cardiology physicians and associated professionals who are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease, electrophysiologic abnormalities, and pericardial diseases.
Objectives
At the completion of this educational activity, the participant will be able to do the following:
- Summarize the anatomy and physiology of the normal and abnormal pericardium;
- Compare and contrast the safety and utility of various percutaneous and minimally invasive approaches to accessing the pericardial space;
- Discuss the use of these pericardial access approaches for various multidisciplinary cardiac therapeutics including lead placement and cardiac ablation;
- Describe the advances in imaging modalities for the pericardium and their effect on diagnosis and treatment;
- Describe the risks and complications of pericardial therapeutics.
