Description
As a surgical innovation, single-port laparoscopic surgery has gained interest and expanded throughout multiple specialties. However, single-port surgeries require substantial technical skills, creating a need for educational activities that increase practitioners’ competencies to perform these procedures.
To fill this need, we have developed an educational activity focused on the following approaches:
- Single-Port Laparoscopy,
- Single-Port Robotic Applications.
This multidisciplinary learning activity concentrates on teaching attendees the skills and techniques needed to perform
these surgeries and helping them understand the challenges and benefits involved. Expert lecture sessions and live surgery
demonstrations will be held in the morning with optional non-CME hands-on workshops in the afternoon.
The agenda features the following:
- Live surgical procedures (pending patient selection),
- Scientific sessions featuring state-of-the-art single-port robotics, single-port laparoscopy, and reduced-port laparoscopy,
- Breakout sessions for urology, colorectal, general surgery, and gynecology,
- Live hands-on lab (non-CME) with specialty specific assignments,
- Moderated videos of step-by-step technical considerations,
- Poster session including Best Poster Award,
- How to incorporate new surgical approaches into your clinical practice,
- Debates and discussions.

Target Audience
This activity is designed for physicians and surgeons from various specialties including urology, gynecology, colorectal surgery, bariatric surgery, and general surgery as well as engineers, nurses, medical administrative staff, and surgical technicians who are interested in the minimally invasive techniques of single-port laparoscopy and robotics.
Objectives
Through this educational offering, the Cleveland Clinic strives to produce significant knowledge and competency gains in health care practitioners regarding single-port laparoscopy and robotic surgery, knowledge that will, in turn, improve the quality of care for their patients.
After completing this learning activity, the participant will be able to do the following:
- Summarize the indications and patient selection criteria;
- Provide an up-to-date review of instruments and optics for these minimally invasive techniques and describe their clinical implications, especially as they apply to expanded indications;
- Demonstrate step-by-step surgical techniques for robotic and laparoscopic single-port procedures;
- Explain the potential benefits, risks, and limitations of single-port laparoscopy and robotic-assisted surgery;
- Discuss the prevention and management of complications.
