Description

As surgical innovations, single-port laparoscopic and needlescopic surgery have gained interest and expanded throughout multiple specialties requiring substantial technical skills thus creating a need for educational activities focused on this topic.

To fill this need, we have developed an educational activity focused on the following approaches:

  • Single-port laparoscopy
  • Single-port robotic applications
  • Needlescopic laparoscopy

This multidisciplinary learning activity concentrates on teaching attendees the skills and techniques needed to perform these surgeries and helping them understand the challenges and benefits involved. Expert lecture sessions and live surgery demonstrations will be held in the morning with optional hands-on workshops in the afternoon.

Key Features

  • Live surgical demonstrations (urology, colorectal, gynecology, general surgery)
  • State-of-the-art interactive lectures
  • Review of new generation robotic single-port systems
  • Hands-on porcine lab including robotic single-port, needlescopic, and single-port laparoscopy
    (optional, non-CME lab)
  • Moderated videos of step-by-step technical approaches
  • How to incorporate new surgical approaches into your clinical practice
  • Live video feed of a novel surgical approach from an international surgery center
  • Poster session including Best Poster Award
  • Debates and discussions

Objectives

Through this educational offering, Cleveland Clinic strives to produce significant knowledge gains in health care practitioners regarding single-port laparoscopy, robotic surgery, and needlescopic surgery, knowledge that will in turn improve the quality of care for their patients.

After completing this learning activity, the participant will be able to do the following:

  • Explain the potential benefits, risks, and limitations of single-port laparoscopy and robotic-assisted surgery;
  • Recognize the indications necessary for patient selection criteria;
  • Provide an up-to-date review of instruments and optics for these minimally invasive techniques and describe their clinical implications, especially as they apply to expanded indications;
  • Demonstrate competence in the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques in general surgery, urology, colorectal, and gynecology;
  • Create a stepwise approach to incorporating these surgical approaches into clinical practice
