Learning Objectives

After completing this case the reader should be able to:

  • Recognize patients with resistant hypertension and identify factors associated with true resistance and pseudo-resistance.
  • Define true resistant hypertension, as established by guidelines.
  • Describe methods to exclude pseudo-resistant hypertension from the diagnosis.  
  • Apply management principles to the appropriate treatment of resistant hypertension.

Target Audience

Directed to primary care physicians including family practitioners and internists.
