Description
The Traditional and Emerging Approaches to Challenging Cases in Anesthesiology Series includes cases, corresponding to articles from Anesthesiology News.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Explain the complexities of anesthetizing patients with peripheral vascular disease.
  2. List the multiple comorbidities that frequently occur in this population.
  3. Formulate a cardiac preoperative evaluation plan based on the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association guidelines for perioperative evaluation for noncardiac surgery.
  4. Discuss the risks and benefits of regional and general anesthesia for peripheral vascular surgery.
  5. Describe the evolution of the recommendation for perioperative β-blockade as a mechanism to decrease cardiac morbidity and mortality.
  6. Assess the future of anesthesia for vascular surgery as it transitions toward endovascular (minimally invasive) procedures with the use of stents.

This activity is directed to anesthesiologists.
