| Objectives |
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Define community-acquired pneumonia and describe how it differentiates from other types of pneumonia.
- List the pathogens known to be causative agents of pneumonia.
- Explain the pathogenic mechanism of pneumonia.
- Describe the diagnostic workup, risk factor scale, and rationale for hospitalization in community-acquired pneumonia.
- List the medications used to treat community-acquired pneumonia and outline their recommended use.
- Differentiate between empiric and pathogen-specific treatments.
- Discuss the problems of antibiotic resistance and medication use in the outpatient setting.
