Description
Biologic agents have become an important part of the therapeutic strategies for clinicians caring for patients with rheumatic and inflammatory diseases. These therapies, however, have varying efficacy and safety profiles depending on the specific disease. Understanding the potential role and risks of these biologics is important for clinicians to maximize outcomes from these therapies.
This manuscript presents a review of biologics in specific populations with diseases related to rheumatology and gastroenterology as well as presentations on how to effectively administer the agents.
Objectives
After completing this learning activity, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss the safety and efficacy of biologic agents that have been studied in Wegener’s granulomatosis, psoriatic arthritis, and systemic vasculitis.
- Discuss the risks and benefits of biologic therapy in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
- Describe the potential for developing PML with natalizumab and the initial evaluation and therapy of this serious adverse effect.
- Summarize the rationale for biologic use in the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
- Create a management plan regarding dosing and safety issues associated with biologic therapies for rheumatoid arthritis.
Target Audience
Rheumatologists, gastroenterologists and other health care professionals managing patients with rheumatologic diseases.
