The R. J. Fasenmyer Center for Clinical Immunology
is dedicated to the following:

  • Promoting excellence in patient care, research, and education in the field of clinical immunology with a particular emphasis in the areas of chronic viral diseases and vasculitis.
  • Promoting and supporting innovative research in the field of immunology.
  • Fostering and supporting education and training in clinical immunology for the medical profession and working with volunteer and community-based institutions to promote education and awareness for the general public regarding clinical immunology.

Advances in B Cell Science
Webcasts
In recent years, the understanding of autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs) has led to encouraging advances in treatment. Reliance on therapies that affect a wide
range of cellular targets is a thing of the past. The use of targeted biologic therapy is on the rise as additional data emerge regarding their efficacy, utility, and safety.
The adoption of these agents into clinical practice challenges clinicians to remain informed and up to date regarding new data released at European annual conferences. This webcast series is designed for busy clinicians who are interested in keeping abreast of cutting-edge data and novel therapies in the use of B-cell–directed therapy for ARDs. Expert faculty will bridge the gap between the current immunobiologic data and the day-to-day workings of clinical practice.

B Cells, Cytokines, and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Exploring New Therapeutic Strategies
This webcast is designed to provide an evidence-based review of research on B-cell pathogenesis in SLE and developments in B-cell targeted therapies for SLE, with the overall goal of improving outcomes in this patient population.

Biologic Therapies III
Case-Based Lesson Webcasts Monograph
Biologic agents have become an important part of the overall therapeutic strategies for clinicians caring for patients with rheumatic and inflammatory diseases. Patients who are candidates for biologic therapies often present with other comorbidities, including infections, malignancies, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune diseases. Understanding and incorporating these comorbidities into the management approach is important for clinicians when prescribing biologics in these special populations.

Cardiovascular Disease in Inflammatory Arthritis: Getting to the Heart of the Matter
Webcasts Monograph
Patients with inflammatory arthritis are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown a clear link between inflammatory mediators and the development of cardiovascular disease, which has led to research on inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines. In clinical trials using TNF inhibitors, most data suggest that blocking TNF production can decrease the incidence of some cardiovascular events. However, TNF inhibitors have been associated with increases in other cardiovascular diseases, resulting in their contraindication in these patient populations. Clinical trials with investigational interleukin-receptor antagonists have shown positive results on some systemic inflammatory markers.

Rheumatology Highlights Report
Webcasts
Do you have 15 minutes? A patient cancelled an appointment or you finished a meeting early? Give us 15 minutes and we will give you the world of rheumatology. The Rheumatology Highlights Report is designed for the busy clinician. It is designed to provide highlights from key scientific presentations and/or abstracts presented at international and national rheumatology meetings. Clinical experts attending these meetings have selected the most significant data to report. Each activity includes a 15-minute presentation with supporting materials and commentary on the clinical implications of the data.

Neuroinflammatory Diseases in Rheumatology Online Series:
Webcasts Podcasts Interactive Monograph
Topics include:

  • Vasculitis of the CNS
  • PML: An Infectious Complication of the CNS in Immunosuppressed Patients
  • Headache in Patients with Rheumatic Disease
  • Neuropsychiatric SLE

Rheumatoid Arthritis eJournal Club
Live Discussions Webcasts
This eJournal club will engage RA clinicians in an examination, discussion, and assessment of the most recent peer-reviewed, RA literature. Areas of focus will include emerging approaches to improve patient function, quality of life, and reduce mortality.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Virtual Grand Rounds
Webcasts CME

This Virtual Grand Rounds series will give RA clinicians an opportunity to hear expert opinion on the management of complicated RA patient case histories that encompass diverse treatment challenges. Participants will be able to query the Program Chairperson on each case upon completion of the activity.
