Description
The management of small renal masses has continued to evolve in recent years with the introduction of thermal ablative techniques, more sophisticated surgical techniques as well as the understanding that there are a group of patients that have more indolent diseases that may be safely observed. The risks and benefits of each of these approaches will be discussed, including the risk of local and metastatic progression. Lastly, appropriate selection is paramount to successfully implementing any approach and this will be discussed in the context of management of small renal masses.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Contrast the benefits and pitfalls of specific management options for patients that present with an incidental renal mass, including radical nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, energy ablation, and active surveillance.
- Discuss the potential morbidity associated with active surveillance strategies, including the risk of local and metastatic progression.
- Explain issues of patient selection for appropriate management for a small renal mass.

This activity is directed to medical oncologists and urologists.
