As a result of advances in surgical and diagnostic technology, the number of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) who live to be adults is growing. Because of the many complications associated with this disease, these adult patients often require specialized care. However, there is a knowledge gap among practitioners regarding care for adult patients with CHD. Most CHD surgeons have only treated pediatric patients and most cardiac surgeons who treat adults have not been trained to deal with the abnormalities and complexity of CHD, creating a need for education in this area.
To address this educational need, the Cleveland Clinic Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Diseases and the Center for Continuing Education propose to present a live symposium focused on management of adult patients with CHD. This activity will offer Continuing Medical Education credits.
The goal of this educational activity is to improve surgeons’ knowledge and skills regarding CHD. By providing clinically relevant discussions of the most current evidence, this symposium strives to help surgeons transfer that learning directly to their clinical practice, which will ultimately improve patient outcomes.
Target audienceThis educational activity is designed for adult and pediatric cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac sonographers, perfusionists, physician assistants, PICU nurses, and nurse practitioners.
OBJECTIVESAfter completing this activity, the attendee will be able to do the following:
- Describe the options for surgical therapy for coarctation of the aorta in the adult and in the infant relating to distal aortic pressure measurements and determine the optimal time to use partial bypass for treatment;
- Summarize the complications in long-term Fontan patients and the operative options available to treat arrhythmias, repair homodynamic lesions, and institute pacing strategies;
- Discuss the controversies of management of the pulmonary valve during repair of tetralogy of Fallot;
- Create a plan for managing difficult arrhythmias in patients with congenital heart disease.
