2nd Annual
Congenital Heart Disease in the Adult
Ronald & Helen Ross Symposium
October 9, 2009
InterContinental Hotel & Bank of America Conference Center
Cleveland, Ohio
Description
As a result of advances in surgical and diagnostic technology, the number of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) who live to be adults is growing. Because of the many complications associated with this disease, these adult patients often require specialized care. However, there is a knowledge gap among practitioners regarding care for adult patients with CHD. Most CHD surgeons have only treated pediatric patients and most cardiac surgeons who treat adults have not been trained to deal with the abnormalities and complexities of CHD, creating a need for education in this area.
The goal of this educational activity is to improve clinicians’ knowledge and skills regarding CHD, by providing clinically relevant discussions of the most current evidence. This symposium strives to help clinicians transfer learning directly to their clinical practice, which will ultimately improve patient outcomes.
Target Audience
Designed for adult and pediatric cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac sonographers, perfusionists, physician assistants, PICU nurses, and nurse practitioners.
Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to do the following:
- Summarize the natural history of and create a plan for evaluating and treating anomalous aortic origin of the coronary arteries in patients with congenital heart disease;
- Discuss the management of the pulmonary valve and valve-sparing strategies during repair of tetralogy of Fallot;
- Describe end stage heart dysfunction including evaluation and pre-, peri-, and postoperative care of cardiac transplantation in the adult and child with congenital heart disease;
- Review the potential changes in health care policy for congenital heart disease.
