The satellite symposium will present in-depth clinical perspectives on the advantages and disadvantages of surgical and medical treatment of Crohn’s disease in a case-based format. It will also highlight major strategies for when and how medical versus surgical therapy should be instituted.

Target Audience

The satellite symposium and the enduring materials are directed toward gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, primary care internists and family practitioners, nurses, nurse practitioners and other associated professionals worldwide who treat IBD and Crohn’s disease and who want to understand the full range of treatment options with associated advantages and disadvantages to minimize the risk of complications.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Summarize the most up-to-date information on advances in medical therapy, particularly anti-TNF-alpha agents, and surgical therapy, such as bowel-reserving stricturoplasty, risks of pre and peri-operative use of biologics for patients with moderate to severe Crohn’s disease.
  • Discuss the current evidence regarding potential risks for medical versus surgical therapies for these patients;
  • Analyze the evidence and select the most appropriate strategies to balance the risks and benefits for medical and surgical therapy in individual patients;
  • Create a management strategy to minimize medical and surgical adverse sequelae of the selected therapy.
  • Identify strategies for building alliances between gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons.
