Description

Disorders of the gastrointestinal tract cover a wide range of medical conditions that include the liver, bile duct, and pancreas. The disease burden of GI disorders is significant, afflicting 60 to 70 million Americans and causing nearly 250,000 deaths annually. Approximately 9% of all US hospitalizations are associated with GI disease, costing more than $100,000 billion annually. Because of the substantial patient population, interventions that improve the care of these patients can have a significant impact on outcomes.
