Description
This one-day course will provide an update and framework for health care practitioners to evaluate, diagnose, and manage the patient with chronic pain.
A variety of pain conditions will be discussed by a multidisciplinary faculty. The faculty will review state-of-the-art approaches to the diagnosis and management of pain. Topics will include:
- legal issues in opioid prescribing;
- female pelvic pain;
- neuropathic pain;
- CRPS (chronic regional pain syndrome); and
- surgical options for spine pain.
The course begins with a shared set of lectures in the morning. After lunch, two tracks are available that will address specific practice interests. Topics will include
- radiofrequency ablation for axial spine pain;
- joint injection techniques;
- chemical dependency;
- hand and wrist pain;
- vitamin D’s role in pain management;
- yoga and relaxation for chronic pain;
- pelvic floor exercises;
- exercise for rehabilitation of the spine;
- chiropractic manipulation therapy; and
- when to consider a chronic pain rehabilitation program.
The course will focus on how the health care professional can sort out the nature of chronic pain and what they can do to improve their patient’s quality of life. The participant will gain understanding of how, when, and why to refer patients for specialized pain care.
Target Audience
This course is designed for family, general and physical medicine and rehabilitation practitioners, internists, orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologists, neurologists, geriatricians, physician assistants, nurses, and other health care providers who care for chronic pain patients.
Objectives
As a result of attending this symposium, the participant will be able to do the following:
- Summarize treatment options for neuropathic pain;
- Understand what to expect from a spine surgery consult;
- Summarize diagnosis and management of CRPS;
- Describe how to manage the difficult patient in the office setting;
- Summarize regulatory and legal issues in opioid prescribing;
- When to recommend radiofrequency ablation for axial spine pain;
- Summarize diagnostic and therapeutic joint injection techniques;
- Describe the causes and treatment options for hand and wrist pain;
- Describe the role of vitamin D in pain management;
- Summarize how yoga and relaxation can benefit the chronic pain patient;
- Determine when a patient with chronic pelvic pain can be managed in the pelvic pain clinic and the indications for pelvic floor exercises;
- Define how to utilize exercise for rehabilitation of the spine;
- Determine when chiropractic manipulation therapy is indicated;
- Know when to consider a multidisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation program.
