Description

This course is designed to educate physicians and patients on the latest genetic findings for various connective tissue disorders, including Marfan Syndrome, bicuspid valves, Loeys-Dietz Syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and describe advances in management strategies for patients with these disorders.

The course will present expert didactic presentations, panel discussions, and break-out sessions.

Target Audience

This course will be of interest to physicians, surgeons, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other health care providers in the following specialties: cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, pediatric cardiology, internal medicine, genetics, and genetic counseling.

Objectives

After completing this learning activity, the participant will be able to do the following:

  • Detail management strategies for connective tissue disorders, including Marfan Syndrome, Loeys-Dietz Syndrome, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome;
  • List criteria for a clinical examination and genetic mutation diagnosis;
  • Discuss controversies regarding treatment decisions based on clinical diagnosis versus gene mutations;
  • Describe current techniques for bicuspid valve surgery and aortic dissection;
  • Summarize the research initiatives and findings for connective tissue disorders and describe their potential clinical implications;
  • Utilize guidelines to perform genetic counseling for families.

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Center for Continuing Education designates this educational activity for a maximum of 14.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Participants claiming CME credit from this activity may submit the credit hours to the American Osteopathic Association Council on Continuing Medical Education for Category 2 credit.

The Ohio Board of Nursing will accept at face value the number of contact hours awarded for an educational activity that has been approved for CE by a nationally accredited system of CE approval. Therefore, the 14.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits will be accepted for nursing credits.
