Description
This course is designed to educate physicians and patients on the latest genetic findings for various connective tissue disorders, including Marfan Syndrome, bicuspid valves, Loeys-Dietz Syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and describe advances in management strategies for patients with these disorders.
The course will present expert didactic presentations, panel discussions, and break-out sessions.
Target Audience
This course will be of interest to physicians, surgeons, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other health care providers in the following specialties: cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, pediatric cardiology, internal medicine, genetics, and genetic counseling.
Objectives
After completing this learning activity, the participant will be able to do the following:
- Detail management strategies for connective tissue disorders, including Marfan Syndrome, Loeys-Dietz Syndrome, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome;
- List criteria for a clinical examination and genetic mutation diagnosis;
- Discuss controversies regarding treatment decisions based on clinical diagnosis versus gene mutations;
- Describe current techniques for bicuspid valve surgery and aortic dissection;
- Summarize the research initiatives and findings for connective tissue disorders and describe their potential clinical implications;
- Utilize guidelines to perform genetic
counseling for families.
