Question:

I know that pegylated interferon and ribavirin are the standard treatment for chronic hepatitis C, but what else is available?

Though there are many medications being developed and studied for the treatment of HCV, approved modalities are limited. Consensus interferon (CIFN) is commercially available for HCV treatment. It is currently FDA approved for TIW dosing. The data from the DIRECT trial have been submitted to the FDA to amend the labeling to include using CIFN with ribavirin at doses of 9 or 15 mcg daily, in patients who failed pegylated interferon therapy. It is currently considered second-line treatment for patients with only partial response to pegylated interferon or for patients who have relapsed from PEG-IFN treatment.
