Target Audience

This activity is intended for anesthesia providers.

Activity Design

The Traditional and Emerging Approaches to Challenging Cases in Anesthesiology Series includes cases, corresponding to articles from Anesthesiology News.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the definition of obesity and the comorbidities associated with obesity.
  2. Discuss the airway risks associated with obesity, including problems with ventilation and intubation.
  3. Describe the new Advanced Cardiac Life Support guidelines regarding airway management.
  4. Describe the value of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) as a rescue device in both cannot intubate/can ventilate and cannot intubate/cannot ventilate scenarios.
  5. Discuss the value of the LMA as a conduit to intubation and the techniques for implementing this approach.
  6. Discuss the risks associated with using the LMA in obese patients.
