Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an iPod to receive podcasts?
No, you do not need an iPod to experience podcasts. Audio podcasts can be played on any portable media player. Video podcasts can be viewed on your computer with Quicktime and on a video enabled iPod.

What is ‘Podcasting’?
Podcasting is a systematic method of distributing audio and video content over the Internet.

Audio Podcasts are MP3 audio programs that can be downloaded onto your computer and transferred to an audio CD, iPod, or any portable media device that supports MP3’s for listening. You can also listen at your computer if you have speakers or headphones.

Video Podcasts are MPEG-4 encoded video files that can be downloaded onto your computer, and watched on your monitor, or transferred to a video enabled iPod. Video Podcasts require QuickTime Player and jukebaox software like iTunes.

How do I get a podcast?
To subscribe and manage your podcasts, you need a program on your computer – a jukebox or podcast receiver (iTunes, FireAnt, Juice or others). Once installed this program will manage all the podcasts you subscribe to, and allow you to customize when you want to download individual podcasts. Some of these programs will assist you in transferring your podcasts onto a portable media player or audio CD, so you can take your podcasts with you.

What are some advantages of podcasts?
Portability. You can listen to an audio podcast just about anywhere, at your computer, on any MP3 player or audio CD. Audio podcasts can be burned to an Audio-CD or MP3-CD and listened to in your car, home or portable CD player. Another advantage is time-shifting. Similar to using a VCR with your TV. Once downloaded, you can watch a video podcast or listen to an audio podcast when it is convenient for you, at any time.

Can I claim CME credit for Podcasts?
Yes. CME credit is available for some podcasts. They will be identified as being approved for CME. There is usually a nominal fee to cover the production and accreditation process. The non-CME podcasts are intended to offer free high-quality educational content from the Cleveland Clinic and the Center for Continuing Education. Please enjoy these podcasts, and refer any interested friends and colleagues to our site.
