Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an iPod to participate in podcast activities?
No, you do not need an iPod to experience podcasts. Audio podcasts can be played on your computer or any portable media player. Video podcasts can be viewed on your computer with Quicktime or on a video-enabled iPod.
What is ‘Podcasting’?
Podcasting is an permission-based method of distributing audio and video content over the Internet. You can download any individual of all podcasts that you are interested in. You also decide when to watch or listen to a podcast you have downloaded.
Audio podcasts are MP3 audio programs that can be downloaded onto your computer and transferred to an audio CD, iPod, or any portable media device that supports MP3’s for listening. You can also listen at your computer if you have speakers or headphones. Audio podcasts can also be listened to through services like iGoogle, Google Reader, Adobe Media Player and Windows Media Player.
Video podcasts are MPEG-4 encoded video files that can be downloaded onto your computer, and watched on your monitor, or transferred to a video enabled iPod. Video Podcasts require QuickTime Player and jukebox software like iTunes. Video podcasts can also be viewed through Adobe Media Player.
How do I get a podcast?
To subscribe and manage your podcasts, you need a program on your computer – a jukebox or podcast receiver (iTunes, ziePOD, Juice or others). Once installed this program will manage all the podcasts you subscribe to, and allows you to customize when you want to download individual podcasts. Some of these programs will assist you in transferring your podcasts onto a portable media player or audio CD, so you can take your podcasts with you. Many of our podcast activities allow you to download podcasts and related files directly to your computer desktop. These audio podcasts can be played using iTunes, Quicktime, Adobe Media Player or Windows Media Player.
If you cannot install Quicktime or iTunes on your computer, you can use web-based services like iGoogle or Google Reader to access the podcast material.
What is an advantage of podcasts?
Portability. You can listen to an audio podcast just about anywhere, anytime. Listen at your computer, on any MP3 player or audio CD. Audio podcasts can be burned to an Audio-CD or MP3-CD and listened to in your car, home or portable CD player.
