Description

The biology of kidney cancer has been elucidated recently, identifying the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in mammalian target of rapamicin (mTOR) as viable biologic targets in the treatment of this disease.  The existing data regarding therapeutic approaches against these targets will be covered in this webcast to highlight the clinical benefits that have been achieved.  In addition, the limitations of the data including both efficacy and toxicity will be discussed.  Last, kidney cancer has a unique and variable biology.  This will be discussed in the clinical context of identifying the appropriate timing and type of therapy for each patient.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Review existing data regarding VEGF- and mTOR-targeted therapy in RCC with regards to objective response rate, PFS and overall survival.
  2. Identify limitations of the data regarding efficacy and toxicity of targeted agents in RCC.
  3. Discuss the variable natural history of RCC and the potential for individualized treatment approaches depending on patient and disease characteristics.

Target Audience

This activity is directed to medical oncologists and urologists.
