Target Audience

This activity is intended for rheumatologists, immunologists, internal medicine practitioners and allied health professionals, including advanced practice clinicians and physician assistants who care for patients with immunologic diseases.


This EJournal Club: Advances in Therapy and Pathogenesis of Rheumatic Diseases educational series will engage rheumatologists, primary care physicians, and other interested clinicians in an examination, discussion, and assessment of the most recent peer-reviewed literature on rheumatic diseases. Expert faculty will lead an interactive discussion with the lead author of a top evidence-based journal article. Together they will filter, synthesize, and translate the key points into clinical pearls that can be applied to the clinician practice. Commentary on emerging management strategies to improve patient function, care, and quality of life will be provided by the article author.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize advances on existing and new therapies that may affect current practice in rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, system lupus erythematosus, vasculitis, gout, and other related autoimmune disorders.
  • Summarize adverse event data from peer-review medical literature and discuss the potential implications for clinical practice.
  • Describe current concepts of selecting targets in inflammatory arthritis and critically appraise the tools for measuring them, including clinical assessment, imaging, and biomarkers.
  • Review data on recent safety signals from new and existing therapies and identify how such data may lead to effective risk mitigation in clinical practice.
  • Describe the implications of high impact therapeutic, diagnostic, and pathophysiologic research in connective tissue diseases such as SLE, vasculitis, and other miscellaneous disorders.
  • Critically appraise the relevance of emerging data on clinical practices including prescribing, monitoring, and sequencing of new and existing therapies.
  • Recognize the strengths and weaknesses of new and emerging studies from the perspectives of design, analysis, and potential sources of bias.
